Figuring things out a bit more with time-lapse and why it is stopping filming... forgot to turn on airplane mode initially, then my phone was overheating from being in the sun, then I said "OK" near my phone so the google assistant turned off the time lapse... sigh!

Morning time lapse 1 - 22s (11m real time)

  • Hayden sets up to work on the decking

  • D brings over the East porch header

"Fancy" East Porch Header

Morning time lapse 2 - 5s

  • H predrilling decking holes

  • P making a shoulder cut on a porch post

Paige's shoulder cut

Morning time lapse 3 - 6s

  • H still predrilling decking holes (done?!)

  • A making a shoulder cut on the other porch post

Afternoon time lapse 1 - 3m 1s (1h 30m real time)

  • H screwing down deck boards

  • P cutting rafter ends using jig D made

  • D starting work on the West porch header

Jig to get consistent rafter end angles - no, I don't own a chop saw

I got a little more focused with my time lapses toward the end of the day after having so many problems with them earlier...

Afternoon time lapse 2 - 42s (21m real time)

  • D assembles, glues up, and screws together the West porch header

Evening time lapse - 2m 34s (1h 17m real time)

OK, should this time lapse be titled...

  • Cantilevers ROCK!

  • How many OSHA rules does D violate?

Summary...

  • D sets up some temporary supports and a cantilever and gets the East porch header in place

  • D measures the lengths of the posts

  • D fastens the post mount to the floor joists

  • Squirrel checks things out

  • D cuts the first post (off camera) - shows the perfect first cut, then finds it's too long and cuts again

  • A comes and helps D get the post in place - D adds clamps

  • D cuts the second post (off camera) - realizes he needs to move some clamps and fasten the mounting plate - then realizes that the bolt for the mounting plate is too long, so decides to all it a day

Off-camera today we started work on the rafters...

  • D made a jig for cutting the ends to the proper angle

  • Used the jig to start work on a template from a 1x6x10 - and quickly discovered that I used the wrong scale on my speed square (used the hip/valley scale, not the common angle scale - doh!) and fixed it

Birds-mouth cuts made - actual roof overhang on back of shed
